See Florence from above

Step, step, then you arrive at the top and the view is amazing! If you want to see Florence from above you have to work a little bit but you will be rewarded for your effort.

This is where you should go: climb on the Torre san Niccolò (Tower St.Nicholas).

It is located in Piazza Poggi and is open only during the beautiful seasons. It is a medieval tower which was part of the walls that encircled Florence. Now the walls are gone but the towers remain and this is the only one that can be climbed safely. In total you will climb 160 steps until you arrive at the height of Piazzale Michelangelo on one part, whilst on the other you have the entire city at your feet. The Tower is open until September 30, every day from 5pm to 8pm (last entrance at 7.30pm), guided visits every 30 minutes. Entrance to the Tower 3 euros, ticket to both the Tower and the Museum of Palazzo Vecchio 8 euros.
To visit the tower you will need to make a reservation: tel. +39 055 2768224  or  +39 055 2768558.

Or you can climb the Cupola (dome). This truly is a breathtaking experience: challenging but thrilling. At one point you can step outside and you will find yourself walking on the narrow balcony which surrounds the cupola roof: here you can experience the frescoes of Vasari and Zuccari up close, beautiful angels and horrifying devils… and then back inside in the middle of the  two shells, in the manner of construction invented by Brunelleschi.

On the top of the dome, after 465 steps, there is a lamp, from which the light enters with a circular terrace with a 360° view…mind the wind!!
It is open daily from 8:30 – 19:00, Saturdays from 8:30 – 17:40, Sundays closed.

Also in Piazza Duomo, it is possible  to climb the Campanile (bell tower) designed by Giotto, again armed with courage, there are about 400 steps….
Open daily from 8:30 to 17:30 SCAR3504

After this, if you are tired of stairs, you could take the bus nr. 12 from the city center to get to Piazzale Michelangelo which is a panoramic balcony of Florence…you could also arrive there by a ramp, but we won’t tell you…
